ORDER OF ADJECTIVES

In English adjectives are used before nouns.

Sometimes several adjectives are used in front of a noun. The following table and examples will help you remember their order.

  round   Swiss

watch

General qualities come before particular ones.

  • Example: dark-blue velvet dress

Personal opinion comes before more objective words.

  • Example: delicious chocolate cake

Usually only two or three adjectives are used before the noun. All other descriptive details are used afterwards.

  • Example: a beautiful new silk blouse, decorated with shiny buttons.
